La Jamaïque est un pays où règne une culture musicale forte et inarrêtable. Le berceau du Reggae possède toujours une scène d’artistes très riche et active. Parmi les jeunes talents, on peut citer SAMORY I, un chanteur de reggae roots originaire de Kingston et qui vient de sortir son nouvel album « STRENGHT », le 17 novembre 2023.
SAMORY I a grandi à Kencot, l’un des quartiers plus difficiles de Kingston. Il est la voix des sans-voix, la voix de l’espoir, de la souffrance et de la résilience. Ce chanteur tire son nom de scène de Samory Touré, un dirigeant africain connu pour s’être battu contre la colonisation européenne au 19ème siècle. Comme lui, il s’élève pour défendre ses pairs, avec sa voix unique, délicate et hors du commun qui produit des émotions multiples. Ses chants profonds exaltent des messages forts et un esprit de rébellion.
Le style de SAMORY I est fermement ancré dans le reggae roots sans frontière. Cet artiste présente des sons contemporains à l’essence classique.
Pour nombreux connaisseurs de la scène jamaïcaine, notamment David Rodigan de la BBC, il est considéré comme « l’un des derniers artistes jamaïcains du moment à vraiment faire du reggae. »
Selon John Masouri du magazine Echoes, « SAMORY I produit actuellement des albums plus que nécessaires ».
Ce nouvel album « STRENGHT » s’inscrit dans la continuité de son premier album à succès « Black Gold » sorti en 2017 avec le célèbre producteur jamaïcain Rory de Stonelove.
Au cours de ces dernières années, il a sorti des sons d’une qualité rare, tels que « Love and Mercy » sur le Gratitude Riddim de Winta James. Winta James, qui a déjà travaillé pour des artistes comme Damien Marley ou encore Chronixx, est le producteur de ce nouvel album.
SAMORY I possède à son actif des singles populaires comme « Blood In The Streets », « Crown » et l’emblématique « Wrath » créé en collaboration avec Kabaka Pyramid (qui a remporté cette année les Grammy Awards) et le très grand Capleton (qui était en concert à Toulouse il y a quelques jours, article dispo ICI). Ces 3 morceaux font partie des 11 constituant « STRENGHT ». SAMORY I a expliqué que ce nouvel album représente « les combats qu’il a mené, que ce soit mentalement ou physiquement. » C’est aussi une déclaration à son fils, qui est la force conductrice de ce projet. SAMORY I a d’ailleurs choisi une photo de son fils et lui pour la couverture de STRENGHT.

SAMORY I grew up in Kencot, one of Kingston’s toughest neighborhoods. He is the voice of the voiceless, the voice of hope, suffering and resilience. This singer takes his stage name from Samory Touré, an African leader famous for fighting against European colonization in the 19th century.
